Signature Goal

When this petition went up yesterday, it was set for a goal of 1,000 signatures. That may end up being too conservative. Any thoughts on what our goal should be?
  • As many as we can get by February 29?  We should have a thousand within the next few days. Once we reach a thousand we send out some media releases saying we have already met our original goal! Then that should spur more activity.    Donna Mace

I thought we might realistically get a thousand in two weeks or so, but it looks like we might meet that goal (total signatures) in a little over one day.  10,000 confirmed signatures seems doable by the end of February when we plan to box them up and send off to President Obama.  Anyone have a loftier goal?  I understand Diane Ravitch tweeted support to 25,000 followers today.

That's a good idea, Donna. I really didn't think this would take off as fast as it did. Here is a couple of graphs for the first 20 hours. Probably doesn't mean much, but interesting. I'll do one tomorrow for the first two days.

  • To have any political impact, the number of signatures has to be well beyond 1,000.  Think of this as a recall petition, to get rid of an elected official.  Nobody is going to care if only 1,000 people sign; they'll be written off as malcontents not worth bothering about.  If there are 10,000 or 20,000 signatures, and include parents as well as teachers, the petition will begin to have some weight.  In any event, the more signatures the merrier.  100,000 or 200,000 would really make Washington take notice.

  • I know there are parent signatures on there. I have heard from parents of my former 5th graders (who are adults themselves now), that they have signed the petition when they saw my post on their kid's page. I say we just work as hard as we can until the end of February to gather signatures. Maybe we can encourage members of this group to post it two places every day. I was able to pick up many signatures today by posting it directly on colleagues' and former students' pages. And we can always repost to other pages in a few days just to make sure as many people as possible have seen it. We need to get more people who use twitter involved in getting this message out. Then we will reach people who don't use facebook.

I'm a parent and signed it. I agree with rasbker - the more signatures the better. I'm probably being a Pollyanna but I was hoping for at least hundreds of thousands if not a million :). Dream BIG!
  • We need to be strategic. Target florida and north Carolina. Obama needs to win those states. Also, any state that has won race to the top funds.

Lot of good points here. As this is a "leaderless resistance" movement, people need to step up and help with whatever targeting they think needs to be done. Networking is probably the single most important issue.

I am trying to find outlets on Huffington, major newspapers, media, of all kinds.  The OWS might provide fertile ground.

Given current trends, it looks likely that we'll have around 2,000 total signatures by Sunday, Feb 5. Confirmed signatures are running about 80% to 85% of total.

As an update, confirmed signatures are running at 77% of total signatures - not so good. If current trends hold, 2,000 confirmed signatures will likely be reached by Feb 15th.

Without some sort of break out, 2,300 confirmed signatures is about the most that can be expected by the end of the month.

edit: Continuing the drive for another month might add another 700 confirmed signatures, given current trends.
